When Will Hawaii’s Economic Recovery Happen ?, This Past Week Was Very Strange,A New Promising Venture Is Proposed For Kawaihae

I found it interesting that this PBN article gives a more positive outlook on Hawaii’s economic turnaround compared to this Honolulu Star Bulletin article. The PBN article says Hawaii should be seeing a economic recovery in 2010. But the Honolulu Star Bulletin says it will not happen until 2011. All I know is we are in for a very rough ride for the foreseeable future. Especially if tourism arrivals and unemployment claims continue to decrease and increase.

On a unrelated note, this week has been very strange. Especially after the HTH exposed the allegedly discarded Hawaii County DPW directive blackballing me,and two other local bloggers. This revelation was initially very frustrating to me. However I’ve taken it in stride. It has greatly increased my blog’s visibility.

Lastly, this activated carbon plant proposed to be built up in Kawaihae sounds like a promising venture. They are planning on converting discarded Macadamia Nut  husks into active carbon. Which in turn can be turned into filtration devices.

Saddle Road Resurfacing, TMT, Military Expansion Were Reasons For Hawaii County DPW’s Directive Blackballing Bloggers ?

Hat tip to Damon Tucker for blogging about Andy Parx’s thoughts about Hawaii County DPW blackballing me, Damon Tucker, and David Corrigan.Andy’s conspiracy theory does have a bit of traction. But overall I think the TMT and the military connections to this directive are tenuous at best. I think the real reason why this directive came about is due to this video of the Saddle Road resurfacing by David Corrigan.

I know David had the best intentions when doing this video. However I think the county took a different view. Especially in light of the revelation Hawaii County breached their contract with HMP Inc and bought asphalt tack coat from Grace Pacific for this project. In Hawaii County’s eyes his video potentially could’ve shown that they breached their contract with HMP.

Hawaii County Council’s Unecessary Trip To Washington D.C, Grace Church Update

I sent this e-mail to the Hawaii County Council in regards to their wasteful trip to Washington D.C for the National Association of Counties conference.

“Aloha,

I am thoroughly disgusted that the majority of the Hawaii County Council is going on a trip to Washington DC paid by taxpayers. This is absolutely the wrong time to be spending this money. Especially in light of Hawaii County’s budget deficit. On top of that a bunch of Kona council meetings have been rescheduled for Hilo to save money. Hello, the latter wouldn’t be necessary if the council didn’t waste money on unnecessary trips like this one to Washington DC.

Aaron”

Lastly I found out that it will take another month for Hawaiian Telcom to relocate their utility poles in front of Grace Church on Palani Road. HawTel has already installed the new cable. However they have to still splice all the individual lines.Which will take time. Thus in other words expect more upcoming delays on Palani Road.

Today’s Blog Hits A New Record,Saddle Road Update,HELCO’s Power Generation Breakdown,Hawaii County Council Wasting Taxpayer’s Money,Robert Thomas’s Hawaii Ceded Lands Commentary

I was a bit disappointed that the mention of me and my blog in that HTH article only brought a meager increase of hits on my blog yesterday (291 total). When I checked today I noticed my blog’s single day record for visits (434) was shattered with 444 hits (and counting). Hopefully these new readers will find my daily blogging interesting and helpful. Thus they’ll come back and read my blog on a regular basis.

There was a pretty good article in the Big Island Weekly about the roadway improvements done to Saddle Road.I thought the reporter did a pretty good job in breaking down the upcoming construction schedule. Especially the reasons why the Kona side of Saddle Road hasn’t been significantly improved yet.

I’ve been asked quite a number times about HELCO’s power generation. Hopefully this breakdown on how Hawaii County’s power is generated here will help address this question.

If any of you thought that the new Hawaii County council would bring change Hawaii County this WHT article should put a nail in that coffin. It is simply unbelievable that the county council is going to be spending eons of money flying to Washington D.C. for a National Association of Counties conference in light of Hawaii County’s weak financial outlook.

If the latter couldn’t be bad enough apparently there has been a couple of upcoming county council meetings that were scheduled in Kona. However they’ve been rescheduled to be held in Hilo to save money. Hello county council members (is anyone home) this wouldn’t be necessary if you didn’t spend our money in such a wasteful manner by going on this trip.

Lastly, attorney Robert Thomas had a interesting commentary here about the Hawaii ceded lands litigation.Robert is not only predicting a decision in favor of the State of Hawaii. But he also noticed that OHA pretty much has conceded defeat and was trying to do damage control to prevent a more damaging ruling by the USSC.

My Thoughts About Hawaii County DPW’s Gag Order Targeting Me, Damon Tucker, And David Corrigan,Waimea Bypass Gets Shelved Again

I found out yesterday about Hawaii County DPW’s allegedly discarded gag order to not communicate with me, Damon Tucker (Damon Tucker’s Weblog), or Dave Corrigan’s Big Island Video News (Damon’s blog is located here and Dave’s vlog is located here)  from HTH reporter Jason Armstrong. I’m eternally grateful that he alerted me about this directive. Otherwise I would’ve never known about it.

That being said, it makes me wonder if Noelani and the DPW had a hidden agenda here. Especially since she boldly mentioned all three of our blogs. We are not the only bloggers on this island. On top of that, it seemed this directive was targeted mostly at me. I had by far interfaced with the DPW more often than Damon and David. Thus as I stated in the HTH article “I’m actually kind of angry about it,” Stene said when told the old policy specifically named him. “It just stinks on all levels on this one.”

But what is especially troubling for me is the fact I was under the impression that I had a good relationship with the previous DPW director and his subordinates. I guess I must’ve stepped on someone’s toes (probably Noelani’s) for this directive to be crafted.Nonetheless, the creation of this directive by Noelani was huge mistake on her part and the DPW’s.

On a related note, she tried calling me yesterday and tried to kiss my ass by acting all apologetic for doing this. I tried to remain civil even though it was very hard to do so on my part. However I refused to accept her apology for her actions.

This blunder by Hawaii County DPW has spread like wild fire through the local blogging world.Larry Geller blogged about this here, along with Damon Tucker (here, and here), RJ Mendoza here, and Andy Parx.

[There is one more troubling aspect of this debacle. I've had a hard talking to DPW,county council ever since this directive was released. Thus it seems in my case I highly doubt this directive has been withdrawn].

Lastly, it seems there is a lack of communication between the HDOT and DHHL to minimize the impact of the Waimea bypass, according to this WHT article. If there was better communication the concerns of the DHHL homesteaders would’ve been addressed years ago. Thus this much needed highway wouldn’t be delayed once again.

Louisiana’s Governor Double Standard,HB 1475 Advances,Hawaii Ceded Lands D-Day,Judge Hara Dropped The Ball

I cannot believe the double standard being implied by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. He complained last night about the inclusion of 140 million dollars for volcanic monitoring in the recently passed federal economic stimulus package. I bet that he wouldn’t be complaining if the money was going to be spent on hurricane monitoring.

Hat tip to @NancyLauer for tweeting about HB 1475.It “requires the public utilities commission to notify the public about new regulatory proceedings via its website and changes the deadline for intervention in certain proceedings to be no later than 20 days after posting of the preceding notice on the commission’s website”. This legislation passed the House and has been transmitted to the Senate today.

Today was D-Day in regards to the Hawaii ceded lands litigation. It doesn’t seem OHA fared very well when it presented its oral arguments today (Hat tip to attorneys Charley Foster, and Robert Thomas for their commentary about today’s events here, here, here, here, and here).

In a nutshell I think attorney Charley Foster called in right when he stated this here :

“It’s clear that the justices are pretty well convinced that the state supreme court erroneously based its decision on the Apology resolution. Justice Ginsburg essentially calls the state court on insulating its decision from being overturned in the legislature by basing it on federal law.”

In my opinion, this doesn’t bode well at all for OHA’s chances of prevailing in this case. Nonetheless it should be still very interesting to see how the court renders a decision on this appeal.

Lastly, RJ Mendoza made a spot on observation here about Judge Hara dropping the ball when sentencing this lady who sold ice near near a school.
