The HDOT is slated to advertise the Akoni Pule Highway/Kawaihae Road/Queen Kaahumanu Highway intersection improvements project early next year. The DOT is obtaining necessary land easements and archaeological clearances for this work.
Hawaii County delayed issuing the construction notice to proceed for the Lindsey Road bridge rehabilitation project again. The project engineer estimated the project may begin in January. However, it took longer than expected to secure the necessary approvals. So, the county delayed the issuance of the NTP until June 1st, 2011. Then it was moved back to May 19th. Nevertheless, they pushed it back to June 13th again. The contractor isn’t ready start work until then.
The Makalei Fire Station groundbreaking was held on Tuesday. I’m absolutely ecstatic construction has started on this much-needed public safety facility.
The ongoing Queen Kaahumanu Highway streetlight issue appears to be completely resolved. I noticed the last segment of disabled lights were activated by the Palani Road/Queen Kaahumanu Highway intersection recently.

Lastly, construction on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway phase II widening project won’t begin in mid-May as previously hoped. The HDOT needs more time to secure archaeological clearances from SHPD, OHA, and the National Park Service. Nevertheless, they’ve made significant progress thus far obtaining these clearances.
