Hawaii County Council District Six Candidate Poll

Its been nearly a month since I switched from Hawaiian Telcom to Oceanic Time Warner Cable. I have no regrets that I did this. Oceanic’s service has been highly reliable and consistent. In addition, I don’t have to worry about the constant outages (that were caused by the old inside wiring) affecting my old DSL service. The latter was a huge pain to deal with. It wasn’t fun trying to troubleshoot my DSL connection in the middle of the night and getting bitten by mosquitoes.

I’ve created a survey to determine how many people have Oceanic’s Road Runner or Hawaiian Telcom’s DSL services.

(I’ve added an additional selection, other, if you don’t use either ISP)

Damon Tucker inspired me to create a Hawaii County Council District six candidate poll. The future direction of the Hawaii County Council will likely be decided between Brittany Smart and Guy Enriques.

I hope Ka’u residents contemplate these two questions before they cast their vote on November 2, 2010.

Do we want two more years of old boy council political haggling?

or

Do we want to infuse the council with new ideas and youthful exuberance?

I believe the council needs fresh ideas and a change in direction. This is why I’ve endorsed Brittany Smart over Guy Enriques.

WHT published a follow-up article regarding the Becky Leau voting smear. The article is full of excuses from WHT and the Democratic Party. However, I don’t believe this was something innocently done. The Democratic Party felt Becky Leau is a threat to unseat incumbent Denny Coffman. So, they took this underhanded action in an attempt to derail her campaign.

Lastly, the latest Kona Blog survey will be available until October 31, 2010. Mahalo for all your feedback thus far.

Hawaii County Council District Six Candidate Brittany Smart Has Received My Official Endorsement

Hawaii County has finally raised the speed limit on most of the Puainako Street Extension. The maximum speed was raised from 45mph to 55mph 1/2 mile from Komohana Street to 1/2 mile from Wilder Road. The remaining segments of roadway remain at 40mph (from Wilder Road to Kaumana Drive intersection) and 35mph (near the Komohana Street intersection).

It is official! I’ve endorsed Hawaii County Council District six candidate Brittany Smart over incumbent Guy Enriques. I believe Ms. Smart is very intelligent and will bring fresh ideas to the county council.

Goodfellow Brothers/SSFM Int’l have submitted an application for a NPDES permit on October 7th, 2010 for the upcoming Queen Kaahumanu Highway Phase II widening project.

Lastly, the stalled Palamanui project was unfairly the focus of this recent WHT article. I believe this development is on much stronger footing than Hokuli’a, or The Villages at Aina Le’a projects. For example, the MOU between University of Hawaii and Palamanui should be finalized this week. This paves the way for Keauhou Kona Construction Corporation to start work on the initial roadway infrastructure for the future UH West Hawaii Campus.

The State LUC Should Not Reclassify O’oma From Conservation To Urban

The newly renovated Hilo county building’s roof leaks. I believe the private contractors working on taxpayer funded projects need more county oversight. This would prevent cost overruns and contractors doing shoddy work.

The Hawaii LUC heard final public testimony regarding the O’oma Beachside Village project yesterday. This land should not be reclassified from conservation to urban. There is way too many existing incomplete and idle projects such as Hokuli’a, Palamanui, Kaloko Heights, etc to justify granting additional entitlements to this project. In addition, the housing market in West Hawaii is still weak. So, there is absolutely not reason allow an additional 950-1200 more homes to be constructed at O’oma.

The proximity of this project to NELHA and the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park also deeply concerns me. I don’t believe the developer can totally prevent runoff from this development (before and after). This will likely harm these two environmentally sensitive areas.

Hunter Bishop, Hawaii County’s public information specialist, responded to my concerns about Mayor Kenoi’s new public access television show
yesterday.

“Hi Aaron,

Thanks for asking about the show. I assume you’re watching it right now. ;) We are using existing funds in the mayor’s budget to give our residents a weekly update of what is going on in County government around the island. As you know, we held an unprecedented number of community meetings with the mayor and cabinet members in every community but not everyone can attend community meetings and people deserve to know more about what’s happening on our island.

The Internet and newspapers cover some of it. We want to give our residents a more comprehensive picture of the projects, people and programs on Hawai’i Island. You may recall the previous administration had a a program called “What’s Up in the County” that was also a weekly program utilizing the same community public access channel. We look forward to covering issues that are important to our residents and giving weekly updates on their government and activities. I hope this answers your questions. Let me know if there’s anything else.

Aloha,
Hunter”

I am utterly shocked that former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has endorsed State House District 7th candidate Scott Henderson, and 2nd Congressional District candidate John Willoughby.

I really dislike what the Tea Party stands for. Ms. Palin is synonymous with the Tea Party movement. So, there is no chance in hell I’ll be voting for either candidate she endorsed.

The Coffee Borer Beetle has been found in the Ka’u District. I hope the powers that be find a solution to combat this damaging insect before it’s too late.

Hawaii County council District six candidate Brittany Smart will be on Big Island Chronicle’s inaugural “Hot Seat” online forum tomorrow.

I found this interesting comment today regarding the exemptions sought by Forest City LLC for their proposed Kamakana Villages project. This project will be crown jewel of the urban Kailua-Kona core for years to come. So, it would be huge mistake to allow the developer to cut corners.

Lastly, I noticed Palamanui is in the process of obtaining a NPDES permit for their upcoming roadway intersection improvements to Queen Kaahumanu Highway. This is a huge step towards restarting this project and building the future UH West Hawaii campus.

CTS Earthmoving Starting Kamaka’eha Avenue Sewer Line Project

CTS Earthmoving Inc. is scheduled to start digging a trench along the northbound lane of Kamaka’eha Avenue starting tomorrow. CTS is extending existing sewer line from Big KMart to the future Keahuolu Interpretive Center south of Macys.

Solar powered traffic control devices will manage traffic flow in this area until work is completed in mid-November. However, the contractor recommends motorists use Makaala Blvd from Queen Kaahumanu Hwy as an alternate route.

CTS is planning to resurface the northbound lane on Kamaka’eha Ave. and the Henry Street/Palani Road intersection at the same time in mid 2011.

The widening of Mamalahoa Highway between NHCH and m.m 56 in Waimea is still on track. This project is estimated to be completed by October 31, 2010.

The Parker Ranch Connector Road public use resolution hasn’t been agendized for the upcoming Hawaii County Council meeting on October 6th, 2010. This roadway should be opened to the public already. However, Parker Ranch and Hawaii County don’t seem inclined to do this. I’m willing to bet it won’t be opened until early 2011 at this rate.

Grace Pacific has completed the last contract item for the Queen Kaahumanu Highway resurfacing project (between Henry and Lako Street). The HDOT is planning to schedule a pre-final inspection within the next couple weeks. Grace Pacific has to fix any issues uncovered during this inspection before the work is accepted by the HDOT.

The remaining equipment at HDCC’s Kealakehe Parkway base yard is needed to dismantle the on site crusher. I hope to get a clearer idea when HDCC plans to vacate this area within the next couple days.

I noticed several Queen Kaahumanu Highway streetlights were activated last night on my way to Home Depot. This is definitely positive sign. I hope the electrical subcontractor’s latest fix solves the problem.

Margaret Wille updated (and here) the status of the Lalamilo roadway reservation easement litigation.

Lastly, Hawaii County Council District six candidate Brittany Smart is the first candidate to accept an invitation to Big Island Chronicle’s introductory “Hot Seat” forum.
