Makalei Fire Station Project Update

The manager, who is overseeing the the Makalei Fire Station project, provided this construction update:

“Project is moving along and currently stands @ 72% complete. Drywall is currently being finished, painters are starting w/ exterior walls and will be moving to interior once drywall work is ready. As you can probably see, trenching work in the highway has started for installing signal beacons. Waterlines (fire and domestic is routed down to the driveway and will be tied in to DWS main once phone pole is relocated (Hawaiian Telcom). Roofing work is progressing and PV system is closely following w/ conduit rough-ins.”

Makalei Fire Station Project Update

One of the county’s SMTP servers, which is outsourced to Pacific Pro-Tech, was red flagged as an originator of spam. This prevented anyone working for the county from e-mailing me between January 3rd and January 11th, 2012.

The manager, who is overseeing the Makalei Fire Station project, ran into this problem. He tried e-mailing me twice during this time, but his e-mails weren’t delivered until Tuesday.

This is the latest construction update for this important public safety facility:

“Work is progressing quite well, we’ve since gotten approvals from both HELCO and DWS for their utilities and been following up w/ Cable and Hawaiian Telcom on their utilities (need to get a pole relocated in the new driveway). Building interior work (drywall, plumbing, AC and electrical) are all progressing along. Waterline work down to the highway is almost completed and contractor is meeting w/ State Highways to do trenching work on the highway. Landscaping work has just started with temporary irrigation lines being installed and tree excavation starting.”

Kamuela attorney Margaret Wille has announced her intentions to run for Councilman Pete Hoffmann’s District 9 seat. I’m happy she decided to run. She’ll add much-needed perspective and intelligence to the council, if elected.

Lastly, Hawaiian Telcom still faces a lot of challenges despite successfully exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy. For starters, their aging last mile infrastructure needs to be improved, if they want to remain a viable competitor to Oceanic Time Warner Cable.

La’aloa Avenue Extension Project Update

I spoke to assistant Corporation Counsel Katherine Garson, who is overseeing the La’aloa Avenue extension condemnations, last week. The second condemnation lawsuit hasn’t been filed yet. She is still compiling documentation, such as a certified copy of the resolution and an affidavit from DPW Director Warren Lee. This has be completed before the second condemnation lawsuit can be initiated.

The Makalei Fire Station project continues to move forward. Maryl KPRS Hawaii Joint Venture anticipates this facility will be completed by late summer. I tried e-mailing the manager overseeing construction last week. However, he likely didn’t respond to my e-mails because of the holidays. I hope he’ll provide a detailed overview of the progress this week.

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company is slated to begin removing the remaining fill material from their Kealakehe Parkway baseyard today. It will take about two weeks to move the material up to West Hawaii Concrete’s facility. In addition, they expect the baseyard will be cleared by the end of January.

I spoke the project manager, who is overseeing the closure of this baseyard, last week. He told me they received a lot of hateful e-mails regarding this eyesore. This is totally unacceptable behavior. These e-mails are an annoyance and won’t expedite this process.

Lastly, the First Circuit Court is slated to hear Goodfellow Brothers motion against DW Aina Le’a Development LLC on February 15th, 2012 in Honolulu. Goodfellow is seeking a preliminary injunction barring DW Aina Le’a Development, etc from disavowing three contracts, which designate how much they receive from each condo unit.

The manager overseeing the Makalei Fire Station project provided this construction update:

“Project is moving along with membrane roofing being complete and SSR roof now being installed. Essentially building is now water-tight and electrical and mechanical trades are now coming in to do all of their rough-in work. The septic system is also complete and contractor is working on site final grading work.”

Makalei Fire Station Project Update

The manager overseeing the Makalei Fire Station project provided this construction update:

“Work is progressing quite well and I expect work to really pick-up now that the dormitory building has membrane roofing on (subcontractors working on interior work). The apparatus bay roof is now completely trussed and metal decking scheduled to be done next. As you can probably tell, the new driveway is now excavated down to the highway. This will allow for the associated utilities to be started on.”

Makalei Fire Station Project Update

The manager overseeing the Makalei Fire Station project recently provided this construction update:

“Work is progressing according to schedule. Work to tie-in new fire station driveway has just started again (as you’ve probably noticed) with excavation and trenching working it’s way down to the highway. Contractor has started installing roof deck on the dorm building and roof trusses to be installed on the apparatus bay this week.”
