Road Runner Speed Downgrade

I decided to downgrade my Road Runner service from Turbo (15Mbps) to the Standard tier (10Mbps) on Wednesday.

The download speed issue started shortly after Oceanic increased (or introduced) the 10Mbps and 30Mbps tiers in early August. Oceanic was aware of this problem, but didn’t address it fast enough. (Speed test results from August 14th until September 20th, 2011)

I could’ve filed a DCCA CATV division complaint, but they did nothing the last time (in early 2001). In addition, I am satisfied with my downgraded service.

Hawaii Road Runner Speed Issue Update

Oceanic Time Warner Cable‘s V.P of Operations provided an update regarding the ongoing Road Runner speed issues. They’ve ordered new head end equipment to resolve this issue. However, it will take some time to integrate the new hardware.

I hope Oceanic resolves this issue soon. My Road Runner speeds remain anemic.

The Miller Starr Regalia law firm published a commentary regarding the 2005 Kelo v. City of New London U.S Supreme Court ruling. It mentioned the ongoing Coupe land condemnation case.

The Coupes assert the Mamalahoa (Hokuli’a) bypass is being built for solely Hokuli’a's benefit. However, the public, not Hokuli’a, will reap the benefits from this bypass. Judge Ibarra and Hawaii Supreme Court have affirmed the roadway’s public purpose in 2007, 2008, and 2010.

I hope the U.S Supreme Court denies the Coupes petition at their September 26th conference. This litigation has dragging on for far too long.

I called up Kirkland Construction again a few days ago. They never returned my phone call which I made on August 25th, 2011. The receptionist told me they’ve been busy preparing for the upcoming Saddle Road project and haven’t gotten around to returning phone calls. She also asked me to be patient and wrote down my contact information again.

Damon Tucker blogged about the outcome of today’s Court hearing. The HCPD charged him with interfering police duties after allegedly assaulting him for videotaping an arrest.

Lastly, the Thirty Meter Telescope has amassed widespread support in my ongoing poll. 97% of the respondents support this project.

Saddle Road Improvement Project Update

Kirkland Construction, the winning contractor for the latest Saddle Road phase, still hasn’t returned my phone call which I made last week Thursday. However, I was able to get a representative of the CFLHD to provide project updates every two months.

Dave Gedeon, the CFLHD Saddle Road project manager, clarified when construction may begin on the Kona side realignment of Saddle Road:

“No schedule has been established as of yet for the start of the west side construction.  There are still a number of submittals and other paperwork to clear before a pre-construction meeting can be scheduled, then issuance of the Notice to Proceed.  However I do not want to speculate on when all this will happen given the number of things that must first be completed.”

Mr. Gedeon also provided an update on the last Hilo phase (between m.m 5.3 and m.m 11):

“We are still in the R/W acquisition stage on the last east side segment; given this process is in part out of our control, we cannot accurately predict when it will be completed.”

Geothermal energy was the topic of recent forum in Hilo. I wish there was less talk and more action towards making our island energy self sufficient.

Lastly, my Road Runner speeds remain anemic. I’m doing daily speed tests to monitor the condition of my Internet service. In addition, I’m forwarding this data to Oceanic Time Warner Cable on a weekly basis.

Oceanic’s V.P of Operations confirmed the service related issue. I hope they resolve it in a timely manner.

Thirty Meter Telescope Update

I received this update from Oceanic Time Warner Cable‘s V.P of Operations confirming the recent inconsistent Road Runner speeds.

“Aaron, I checked with the Big Island folks and there are some issues on the node that feeds you along with several others on the Big Island. We are working on both infrastructure fixes as well as software. I will update you as things move along.”

Incidentally, Oceanic recently rolled out a new Road Runner speed tier, 50Mbps/5Mbps.

The ongoing Thirty Meter Telescope Contested Case Hearings should be wrapped up by September 26th, 2011. This whole process has turned in a circus sideshow. One petitioner claimed their child could speak for Mo’oinanea, a Hawaiian God. In addition, an expert witness asserted the Thirty Meter Telescope project “is a textbook case of 21st-century colonialism.”

Tourism, construction, real estate, and the military, the existing backbones of our local economy,  is unsustainable over the long term. So, we need to make a strong push to diversify our economy. However, the anti-telescope opponents would rather see more service industry jobs (e.g Target) created instead of supporting the TMT.

I don’t believe we’ll see widespread 1Gbps Internet access by 2018 in Hawaii. Hawaiian Telcom’s aging last mile copper loop facilities has to be upgraded to fiber and Oceanic Time Warner Cable needs to provide the service they promised before this goal can be realized.

Lastly, the significant drop in building permits from 2006 to 2011 is absolutely staggering. Hawaii County processed building permits valued at 60 million dollars a month in 2006. That figure dropped to around two million dollars thus far in 2011.

Inconsistent Road Runner Download Speeds

I’ve noticed very inconsistent download speeds (note: its a Microsoft Excel document) since Oceanic increased the speeds of their Road Runner service. Please leave a comment or drop me an e-mail if you’ve noticed the same issue.

Road Runner Speed Increase Update

Oceanic Time Warner Cable increased the download speed for the Road Runner Turbo service yesterday. This was originally scheduled to occur on or around August 15th, 2011. Oceanic is also slated to increase the download speed for the standard tier and introduce the Extreme tier (30Mbps/5Mbps) around the same time.
